简介:Method A8212;Method A describes a quick, safe method for determining if pinholes, voids, or metal particles are protruding through the coating. This method will not, however, find any thin spots in the coating. This method will determine the existence of any gross faults in thin-film pipeline coatings. Method B8212;Method B describes a method for determining if pinholes, voids, or metal particles are protruding through the coating, and thin spots in pipeline coatings. This method can be used to verify minimum coating thicknesses as well as voids in quality-control applications.1.1 These test methods cover the apparatus and procedure for detecting holidays in pipeline type coatings.1.2 Method A is designed to detect holidays such as pinholes and voids in thin-film coatings from 0.0254 to 0.254 mm (1 to 10 mils) in thickness using ordinary tap water and an applied voltage of less than 100 V d-c. It is effective on films up to 0.508 mm (20 mils) thickness if a wetting agent is used with the water. It should be noted, however, that this method will not detect thin spots in the coating, even those as thin as 0.635 mm (25 mils). This may be considered to be a nondestructive test because of the relatively low voltage.1.3 Method B is designed to detect holidays such as pinholes and voids in pipeline coatings; but because of the higher applied voltages, it can also be used to detect thin spots in the coating. This method can be used on any thickness of pipeline coating and utilizes applied voltages between 900 and 20000 V d-c. This method is considered destructive because the high voltages involved generally destroy the coating at thin spots.1.4 The values stated in SI units to three significant decimals are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 简介:This test method covers equipment and methods for determining the porosity of gold or palladium coatings, particularly electrodeposits and clad metals used on electrical contacts.It is designed to show whether the porosity level is less than or greater than a given value which by experience is considered by the user to be acceptable for the intended application.This porosity test involves corrosion reactions in which the products delineate defect sites in coatings. Since the chemistry and properties of these products may not resemble those found in natural or service environments this test cannot be recommended for the prediction of the electrical performance of contacts unless correlation is first established with service experience.This test is intended to be used for quantitative descriptions of porosity (such as number of pores per unit area or per contact) on coatings that have a sufficiently low pore density so that the corrosion sites are well separated and can be readily resolved. As a general guideline this can be achieved for pore densities up to about 100/cm. Above this value the tests are useful for the qualitative detection and comparisons of porosity.A variety of other porosity testing methods are described in the literature [5][6]. Other ISO porosity test methods are described ISO 10308, ISO 12687, ISO 14647 and ISO 15720.

简介:This test method covers equipment and techniques for determining porosity in noble metal coatings, particularly electrodeposits of gold, palladium and palladium-nickel alloy (70 % to 90 % palladium) and clad metals used on electrical contacts.The gel-bulk procedure is not as sensitive to small pores and is more complex than porosity tests involving gaseous corrodants (see ISO 14647 and ISO 15721). It also involves more chemicals, preparation and auxiliary equipment.This test is intended to be used for quantitative descriptions of porosity (such as number of pores per unit area or per contact) only on measurement areas where coatings have a sufficiently low pore density such that the corrosion sites are well separated and can be readily resolved. As a general guideline this can be achieved for pore densities up to about 25/cm.Other porosity testing methods are outlined in ISO 10308. Detailed critical reviews of porosity testing are also available. Other porosity test methods are described in ISO 12687, ISO 14647 and ISO 15721.
