简介:5.1x00a0;Material finer than the 75-x03bc;m (No. 200) sieve can be separated from larger particles or soil aggregations can be broken down much more efficiently and completely by wet sieving than with dry sieving. Therefore, when accurate determinations of material finer than a 75-x03bc;m (No. 200) sieve are desired, these test methods are used on the test specimen prior to dry sieving, or as a determination of the percent of material that is finer than a 75-x03bc;m (No. 200) sieve. Usually the additional amount of material finer than a 75-x03bc;m (No. 200) sieve obtained in the dry sieving process is a small amount. If it is large, the efficiency of the washing operation should be checked, as it could be an indication of degradation of the soil (see Note 2). 5.2x00a0;Method A shall be used with non-cohesive soils containing fine material with little or no plasticity. The specimen is soaked in water to facilitate the separation of the fine and coarse fractions prior to washing through the 75-x03bc;m (No. 200) sieve. 5.3x00a0;Method B shall be used with soils, particularly clayey soils, where the fine material demonstrates plastic behavior and tends to adhere to the larger particles. To provide adequate fine grain dispersal, it is necessary to soak the specimen in a dispersing solution prior to washing through the 75-x03bc;m (No. 200) sieve. 5.4x00a0;To facilitate determination of which method to utilize, the sample may be classified as non-cohesive or having plastic characteristics based upon procedures outlined in Practice D2488 or other means of determining the soil properties. Note 1:x00a0;The quality of the result produced by this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection/etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Practice D3740 does not in itself ensure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; Practice D3740 provides a means of evaluating some of those factors. Within the limitations prescribed in the scope, this test method describes a procedure for determination of total moisture that requires less time than the procedures described in Test Method D3302. 1.1x00a0;This test method covers a single-stage procedure for the determination of total moisture less than 15 % in coal reduced to 2.36-mm (No. 8 sieve) topsize. This test method is for determination of total moisture only. Materials subjected to this test shall not be used in the determination of other test parameters. It is recognized that the conditions of the test can increase the potential for significant oxidation effects on some coals. If the oxidation potential is of concern, the use of this single-stage method shall involve prior agreement between the parties involved. This test method shall not be construed as the referee standard test method for total moisture. For referee purposes, users of this test method are referred to Test Method D3302 for moisture determination methods which are not as susceptible to oxidation effects. 1.2x00a0;Statistical analysis of data from several sources indicates that at a 95% confidence level, there is statistically no significant difference between the mean value of the results obtained by D2961 and D3302 (that is, no bias is detected between the two methods at the 95% confidence level) for moisture levels between 1.4% and 15.8%. These two test methods were not compared in this study for some ranks of coal including lignite and anthracite. The results of this test method are included in the calculation in Test Method C136, and the total amount of material finer than 75 x03bc;m by washing, plus that obtained by dry sieving the same sample, is reported with the results of Test Method C136. Usually, the additional amount of material finer than 75 x03bc;m obtained in the dry sieving process is a small amount. If it is large, the efficiency of the washing operation should be checked. It could also be an indication of degradation of the aggregate. 4.2x00a0;Plain water is adequate to separate the material finer than 75 x03bc;m from the coarser material with most aggregates. In some cases, the finer material is adhering to the larger particles, such as some clay coatings and coatings on aggregates that have been extracted from bituminous mixtures. In these cases, the fine material will be separated more readily with a wetting agent in the water. 1.1x00a0;This test method covers the determination of the amount of material finer than a 75-x03bc;m (No. 200) sieve in aggregate by washing.
