简介:4.1x00a0;The activation spectrum identifies the spectral region(s) of the specific exposure source used that may be primarily responsible for changes in appearance and/or physical properties of the material. 4.2x00a0;The spectrographic technique uses a prism or grating spectrograph to determine the effect on the material of isolated narrow spectral bands of the light source, each in the absence of other wavelengths. 4.3x00a0;The sharp cut-on filter technique uses a specially designed set of sharp cut-on UV/visible transmitting glass filters to determine the relative actinic effects of individual spectral bands of the light source during simultaneous exposure to wavelengths longer than the spectral band of interest. 4.4x00a0;Both the spectrographic and filter techniques provide activation spectra, but they differ in several respects: 4.4.1x00a0;The spectrographic technique generally provides better resolution since it determines the effects of narrower spectral portions of the light source than the filter technique. 4.4.2x00a0;The filter technique is more representative of the polychromatic radiation to which samples are normally exposed with different, and sometimes antagonistic, photochemical processes often occurring simultaneously. However, since the filters only transmit wavelengths longer than the cut-on wavelength of each filter, antagonistic processes by wavelengths shorter than the cut-on are eliminated. 4.4.3x00a0;In the filter technique, separate specimens are used to determine the effect of the spectral bands and the specimens are sufficiently large for measurement of both mechanical and optical changes. In the spectrographic technique, except in the case of spectrographs as large as the Okazaki type (1),3 a single small specimen is used to determine the relative effects of all the spectral bands. Thus, property changes are limited to those that can be measured on very small sections of the specimen. 4.5x00a0;The information provided by activation spectra on the spectral region of the light source responsible for the degradation in theory has application to stabilization as well as to stability testing of polymeric materials (2). 4.5.1x00a0;Activation spectra based on exposure of the unstabilized material to solar radiation identify the light screening requirements and thus the type of ultraviolet absorber to use for optimum screening protection. The closer the match of the absorption spectrum of a UV absorber to the activation spectrum of the material, the more effective the screening. However, a good match of the UV absorption spectrum of the UV absorber to the activation spectrum does not necessarily assure adequate protection since it is not the only criteria for selecting an effective UV absorber. Other elements should have aconcentration below 0,2 %.NOTE High carbon concentrations, in combination with high Mo and Cr concentrations, could have undesirablestructural effects on the sample and could affect the determination of phosphorus and chromium, in particular.Matrix effects exist between the elements listed. To compensate for those inter-element effects, mathematicalcorrections shall be applied. A variety of computer programs for corrections is commonly used and included inthe software package from the manufacturers.

This practice is less effective for collecting settled dust samples from surfaces with substantial texture such as rough concrete, brickwork, textured ceilings, and soft fibrous surfaces such as upholstery and carpeting. Collection efficiency for metals such as lead from smooth, hard surfaces has been found to exceed 758201;% (E1792). 1.1x00a0;This practice covers the collection of settled dust on surfaces using the wipe sampling method. These samples are collected in a manner that will permit subsequent extraction and determination of target metals in the wipes using laboratory analysis techniques such as atomic spectrometry. 1.2x00a0;This practice does not address the sampling design criteria (that is, sampling plan which includes the number and location of samples) that are used for clearance, hazard evaluation, risk assessment, and other purposes. This procedure is suitable for manufacturing control and inspection testing.1.1 This test method covers for the atomic emission vacuum spectrometric analysis of stainless steel in solid form by the point-to-plane excitation technique for the following elements in the concentration ranges shown: ElementConcentration Range, % Chromium17.0 to 23.0 Nickel 7.5 to 13.0 Molybdenum 0.01 to 3.0 Manganese 0.01 to 2.0 Silicon 0.01 to 0.90 Copper 0.01 to 0.30 Carbon 0.005 to 0.25 Phosphorus 0.003 to 0.15 Sulfur 0.003 to 0.065 1.2 This test method is designed for the routine analysis of chill-cast disks or inspection testing of stainless steel samples that have a flat surface of at least 13 mm (0.5 in.) in diameter. The samples must be sufficiently massive to prevent overheating during the discharge and of a similar metallurgical condition and composition as the reference materials. 1.3 Analytical curves are plotted using the concentration ratio method as shown in Practice E 158. One or more of the reference materials must closely approximate the composition of the specimen. The technique of analyzing reference materials along with unknowns and performing the indicated mathematical corrections may also be used to correct for interference effects and to compensate for errors resulting from instrument drift. A variety of such systems are commonly used. Any of these that will achieve analytical accuracy equivalent to that reported for this test method are acceptable. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
